"TERRIFYING"

2021

This is a video to show the sense of the word "terrifying".  I try to express the word in an abstract conception.

"Terrifying": Selected Work

Terrifying means causing great fear or dread and is extremely frightening. When people faced terrifying, they will have physiological reactions such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, and pupil dilation. Psychologically, terrifying not only makes people feel panic, helpless and anxious, in some artwork like film, it also makes people feel excited and curious.

The most powerful determinant of fear is the proximity of threats and their unpredictability. By mixing plots that suspense with sudden and intense shocking events, the emotion of fear can be amplified. In addition, creating a weak and helpless victim and the process of victimisation can inspire the audience's fear of the unknown.

People not only feel terrified of the unknown but also fear things that are very similar to humans. According to the uncanny valley, because robots and humans are similar in appearance and actions, humans will also have positive emotions towards robots, and when the similarity between robots and humans reaches a certain level, humans will respond to suddenly become extremely negative and disgusting, which will bring people a feeling of extreme fear.
